The Seat of the MacDonalds by Ian Cylkowski

Behold the ruins of Duntulm Castle! You can find this site of great historical importance at the far north of the Trotternish peninsula, Skye. It was built in the 14th and 15th centuries by the Clan MacDonald of Sleat during a time when they often battled with the neighbouring MacLeod clan. By the 17th century, the MacDonalds were in charge of the area, and in 1732 it was abandoned when the main MacDonald residence was moved eight miles south. goo.gl/3ZrMLQ It’s an imposing structure, sitting as it does quite prominently on a giant column of volcanic basalt. The castle has seemingly been cordoned off to the public now as the site is structurally weak, which disappointed Lisabet and I. Instead, we hiked down the embankment towards the sea. I found the rock formations around here to be rather fascinating and featured them heavily in this composition looking towards the castle ruins. =) Duntulm Castle, Duntulm, Trotternish, Isle of Skye, Hebrides, Highlands, Scotland. ISO100, f/8, ⅕sec and 31secs at 12mm (18mm full-frame equiv.) using a polariser, a soft 1-stop ND grad, a soft 3-stop ND grad, and a 10-stop full-ND filter stacked on my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens attached to a Nikon D7000. I shot four of the same exposure without the 10-stop for focus stacking purposes and to get a good clean image. I then attached the 10-stopper and opened the lens to f/2.8 to get a good 30-second exposure for smoothing the water and moving the clouds. I then blended the focus stack and the long exposure in post. Processed in Lightroom with Replichrome’s Ektar 100 film emulation, edited in Photoshop.
